Ever wanted to build your own Linux distro or wish that live cd you downloaded included just a few more of your favorite apps? Well with Suse Studio you can quickly build your own tweaked version of Suse Linux with a few easy steps. During the process you can choose between desktop, enterprise or server environments withÂ KDE or Gnome interfaces. The Suse Studio site also has a Gallery section with many images free for download in ISO, VM, and cloud format.

Microsoft Surface Tablet Available October 26th

Microsoft’s new Windows 8 RT (ARM-based) tablet is set to arrive on October 26th with the Intel-based models shipping 90 days later. The RT version, due to its lowerpowered hardware such as its ARM-based Tegra 3 processor, will be limited to Windows Apps only and will not run existing Windows programs. However, for those who are only looking for a simple tablet to run apps and surf the web this lower cost version of Microsoft’s Tablet should do the job. The pro version of the Surface Tablet sports better hardware equivalent to higher end laptops.

The pro version includes an Intel Core i5 processor and will support full Windows desktop software. Unlike most tablets currently on the market, the Surface Tablet features a stylus and two digitizers. One for touch use and the other for Microsoft Surface digital ink. The .7mm stylus allows the user to write on the screen, during which, the tablet detects proximity of the stylus and disables hand input. Another great feature is the magnetic smart cover which doubles as a full keyboard complete with trackpad. Microsoft also offers a version of the smart cover with physical keys closer to a traditional keyboard. Pricing has not been officially announced however, rumors state that the RT version of the Microsoft Surface should be in the $500-$600 range while the pro version will be closer to $1,000 or higher.

Stop Android apps from auto starting with Start Manager

Startup Manager is a great utility for disabling those pesky apps (such as Sprints Telenav) from starting when you reboot your phone. It also stops those apps from automatically restarting after manually stopping them. Turning off the apps you don’t use can save battery life and increase your devices performance as well. After installing Startup Manager just uncheck the apps you want to prevent from starting, reboot your device, and you’re done. The only real negative to Startup Manager is your phone will need root access. You can get Startup Manger on the Play Store for free:

Install Office 15 on Windows 8

If you have tried to install the new Office 15 preview on Windows 8 Consumer Preview then you have more than likely been stopped by the small window telling you that you have to have the full version of Windows 8. Well for those of us who don’t want to wait that long all you need to do is run the installer in compatibility mode for Windows 7. In our first attempt at installing Office 15 the installer crashed but installed without error on the second round. So if yours doesn’t work the first time you may just need to run the installer again. If you need to download Office 15 you can get it here: http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/en

To run the installer in compatibility mode follow the screenshots below

Google futuristic glasses $1,500

Google is in the process of making internet connected augmented reality glasses for everyday use. Google’s “Project Glass” glasses will give the wearer a type of HUD that will show pop up images and icons for messages, phone calls, etc. The units are controlled by voice command appear to provide access to maps, directions, and personal notes. According to an article posted on Fox News, the glasses will only be availble for purchase for a three day period during an annual conference in San Francisco. The glasses also capture and send real-time video from the wearers perspective as well as capture still images. Google releases new Nexus 7 Tablet for $199

Google unveils it’s new 7 inch tablet (Asus-branded) running Android 4.1 Jellybean. It has a 1280x800 display, 8GB storage (16GB version available for $249), 1.3GHZ Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core CPU, and boasts a 12-core GPU! It also has a Micro-USB port, 1.2MP front camera, and 1GB of RAM. The unit will be available from the Google Play store in mid July. Overall this tablet looks quite promising and spec wise a good deal for the money. Google says the Nexus 7 battery life is around 9 hours of 720 HD video. VLC is a great program for playing a large variety of media formats. It’s also a great utility for those audio video files that Windows Media Player refuses to play. Creating playlists are easy as well. Simply select the files u want to play, drag and drop onto the player, and you’re ready to go. VLC also plays CD’s and includes a DVD codec for DVD playback as well. One of our favorite features of VLC is the ability to skip straight to the main DVD menu and start the movie immediately bypassing all the piracy warnings and other junk that other players make you sit through! VLC also has many skins available as well. VLC is available for both Windows and Linux.

To install the skin copy the .vlt file to C:\Program Files\VLC\skins or C:\Programs Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\skins (Windows 7 64-Bit). For Linux installation copy the file to ~/.local/share/vlc/skins2. After the file is copied you can apply the skin by clicking “Tools”, “Preferences”, and selecting “Use custom skin” Under “Look and feel” in the “Interface tab”. Click “Save” then close VLC and reopen. VLC should open with the new skin applied.
